Read to Achieve

Grade 3 Read to Achieve (RtA)

Article 8 Chapter §115C of the General Statutes includes Part 1A, the North Carolina Read to Achieve Program. The goal of this program “is to ensure that every student reads at or above grade level by the end of third grade and continues to progress in reading proficiency so that he or she can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts needed for secondary education and career success.” 

Science of Reading (SoR)

SESSION LAW 2021-8 SENATE BILL 387 and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction require Early Literacy Programs in Wayne County Public Schools focus on the following components:

  • Providing a training program to educators and administrators working with children in the Pre-K -5th grade to ensure instruction grounded in the Science of Reading and outcomes promoting reading achievement in students.

Wayne County Public Schools will ensure delivery of Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) professional development that demonstrates evidence-based success with educators and administrators in establishing deep knowledge of literacy instruction.
