Ms. Harris' 8th Grade Robotics and Engineering Field Trip to North Carolina State University
The 8th Grade Robotics and Engineering students participated in an educational field trip to North Carolina State University (NC State) to explore the various fields within engineering and technology. A total of sixteen students attended the visit, where they were introduced to 18 distinct engineering programs, including mechanical, electrical, aerospace, civil, and computer engineering.
During the tour, students visited several specialized departments. In the Rocket Engineering Department, they observed how university teams design, construct, and test rockets. The group also toured the Race Car Engineering Department, where students learned about the research and development of competitive race vehicles. Additionally, the tour featured a demonstration of advanced 3D printing technology used to produce specialized components for leading industries such as NASA and major airline companies, illustrating the real-world applications of engineering innovation.
Throughout the visit, NC State representatives emphasized the high demand for engineering graduates among Fortune 500 companies worldwide. Students gained insight into how engineering skills and problem-solving contribute to major industries, reinforcing the value of pursuing STEM-related careers.
The group also received an overview of NC State’s admission requirements, which include strong academic achievement—particularly in mathematics and science—active participation in extracurricular activities, and a well-crafted personal statement. The students expressed enthusiasm and inspiration following the visit, with many showing increased interest in pursuing engineering pathways in their future studies.
Following the campus tour, the group visited the North Carolina State Farmers Market, where they enjoyed exploring local produce, foods, and artisan craft displays.
At the conclusion of the trip, the tour director commended the students for their respectful behavior and high level of engagement, noting that they were among the best-behaved groups to visit in recent memory. As a result, NC State extended an invitation for the students to return for a follow-up visit, including an expanded opportunity to engage with the Robotics and Engineering Department for additional hands-on activities and demonstrations.
