Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. It is a four week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses across two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and it does not involve credit, tests, or grades. Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated by their school district or a non-public school.

The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses of up to 400 students each: Governor's School West at Winston Salem State University in Winston Salem, and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. The program is administered by the Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division. This year, more than 1,900 applications were received, further highlighting just how academically gifted and talented the seven WCPS students are in being selected to attend.

It is worth noting that this year WCPS had twelve finalists for Governor’s School. They include Kathrine Hernandez-Wilson, Nathaniel Riso, and Daniel Tung from Charles B. Aycock High; Alicia Asbun from Eastern Wayne High; Alondra Castillo, Kathryn Johnson, and Nicholas Wade from Rosewood High; Collin Tillman from Spring Creek High; Anna Heath from Wayne School of Engineering; and Raven Jackson, Zoey Thompson, and Abigail Fields from Wayne School of Technical Arts.
