About Us
Wayne School of Technical Arts
A joint effort between Wayne County Public Schools &
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base
Background
In December of 2020, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners, Wayne County Board of Education, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to:
Form a cooperative relationship and engage in dialogue regarding the development of a new (or partnering) school as part of the Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS), operated by the WCBE, on SJAFB, utilizing SJAFB facilities provided via a real property instrument, and support by the BOCC.
Curriculum & Program Planning
Wayne School of Technical Arts offers students a STEM-themed education, with both technical course offerings and advanced placement courses.
The core academic program at WSTA is designed to meet NC Career and College Ready requirements, including math, science, social studies, English, and world languages.
Students will have the opportunity to earn the AP Capstone Diploma Endorsement, and/or the opportunity to earn industry credentials in a technical arts field of study.
When fully populated, WSTA will serve 420 students in grades 6-12.
Selected via lottery, WSTA will admit 60 students per grade, with 50% being military connected and 50% from across the WCPS district.
In fall 2022, the school opened with students in grades 6, 9, and 10. The following two years students will be selected to fill grades 6 and 9, until the full student population is achieved.
Grades 6-8: Students will be enrolled in humanities, integrated math/science courses, and career and technical courses in MineCraft computer programming (introductory, intermediate, and advanced), along with health and physical education.
Grades 9-12: Students will continue their studies with robust core course offerings to include honors courses in math, science and history, preparing them for success in an AP Capstone program including AP Seminar, AP Research, and a minimum of four additional AP courses selected from humanities and STEM fields.
CTE options: A WSTA staff member teaches AP Computer Science, Entrepreneurship I, and Entrepreneurship II.
Wayne Community College will provide opportunities for juniors and seniors to earn articulated credits, college transfer credits, and industry credentials.
