WCPS to Hold Kindergarten Registration
This is the image for the news article titled WCPS to Hold Kindergarten RegistrationWayne County Public Schools will hold its Kindergarten Registration Day, Tuesday, April 25, at 13 elementary schools. Registration will last from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at nearly all schools. Edgewood Community Developmental School and North Drive Elementary will end their registrations around 2:30 PM due to their earlier dismissal times. Spring Creek Elementary will hold its event from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. due to its later start time.

A child must be five years old on or before August 31 to register for kindergarten for the coming year. Parents/Legal guardians must present an official birth certificate and immunization records to school officials. Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child’s birth.

Parents/guardians must also show “proof of residence.” To enroll a child, parents must present two sources of documentation such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt, or any document which clearly proves current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing as proof of residence. Parents must enroll their kindergarten child in the school district in which they live, and school assignments are made by the local school system.

North Carolina law requires that each kindergarten child receive a health assessment and his/her shots. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form, which is available through the school district, the Wayne County Health Department, and most pediatricians’ offices. If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on Monday, August 28.

Parents/guardians can go to the district website at www.waynecountyschools.org to see a complete list of enrollment requirements, as well as find the school their child will attend.

Anyone unable to register their child on the designated day are encouraged to contact the school. Parents/guardians unsure of the school their child will attend should call the district administrative offices at 919-731-5900, stop by the administrative offices at 2001 East Royall Avenue, or go to the district website at www.waynecountyschools.org.

If a parent/guardian wishes to request a transfer to a different school, transfer requests will be accepted during the month of June for schools that have space available. A list of schools with space available will be made public.

Students currently enrolled in Kindergarten will not attend school on Tuesday, April 25, which will count as a vacation day for these students.
