The district-level IAOY program is a formalized selection process that highlights the top instructional assistants in the district. As part of the program, each applicable school named an IAOY to represent it in the coming year. A selection committee interviewed each candidate, and narrowed the field to three finalists. The WCPS IAOY will be selected from the three finalists and announced at a reception to be held at the district’s Professional Development & Family Engagement Center on May 1 at 4:00 PM.

“Instructional Assistants have a valuable role in our schools, supporting both students and teachers,” states Dr. Yvette Smith Mason, WCPS Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Professional Development. “We look forward to recognizing the school-level Instructional Assistants of the Year on Tuesday, and wish our three finalists the very best in the final round of this district program.”

Finalists Info:

Mrs. Carter, an Instructional Assistant at Tommy’s Road Elementary, has two years of service with the school district, all at her present school.

“Mrs. Carter is technologically gifted, and is very helpful maintaining our campus computer lab,” states Tameka Allen, TRE principal. “Mrs. Carter is the kind of assistant who sees something that needs to be done and takes care of it without being asked. She helps keep the children focused and on track so that they can keep up with the many requirements in today’s high paced school environment.”

Mrs. Hand, an Instructional Assistant at Greenwood Middle, has five years of service with the school district, with two at her present school.

“Mrs. Hand has proven herself to be a true professional,” states Ryan Nelson, GWM principal. “She is an assistant in a self-contained Exceptional Children’s classroom. What she offers goes beyond the classroom. She leads by example and causes others to raise their own level of performance.”

Mrs. Barnes, an Instructional Assistant at Charles B. Aycock High, has 7.5 years of service with the school district, all at her present school.

“Mrs. Barnes belief and commitment to children is evident in the life skills classroom,” states Dr. Earl Moore CBA principal. “She has planted seeds hope to the children who were placed in her care. She challenges each and every student to be and do their very best.”
